The artwork is inspired from an early winter’s morning, specifically an experience shared with friends who came together to view Matariki. In the struggle to find the tiny cluster in the morning sky the group of friends shared kōrero to find Matariki and spent time acknowledging each star through karakia and mihi.
Some of the information on these walls are from the book ‘Matariki the star of the year’ written by Rangi Matamua.
The floor decal is a map of the morning sky, just before the sun rises. It shows you how to find Matariki when you align it with other stars and star constellations. If you look down from the above floor you’ll see the map and where Matariki sits in the sky amongst the other stars.
